Your FD is watching you
One of the latest jokes on the after-dinner circuit concerns the division of labour between those who do and those who don’t. The line is that a few people in business make things happen, some of the rest just watch things happening, while the majority have no idea what’s going on.
The puzzle is where financial directors fit into this analysis. Surely they can’t be in the last category, watching the world go by in bemusement.
After all, FDs are there to make sure the rest of the organisation understands, aren’t they? But then it would be difficult to argue that they are the people who make big things happen. So FDs must be the watchers. Which makes them a lot smarter than most of their board colleagues, who in most companies seem to fall into the benighted majority.
