EXTRAORDINARY ITEMS - The bank exec who really counts.
We can’t begin to think what Oscar Wilde would make of the situation at Barclays, which has been so careless that it’s lost its chief executive and chairman, while the executive deputy chairman has decided to take a less hands-on role. But fear not, for a financial director is coming to the bank’s rescue. Oliver Stocken, the 54-year-old Barclays FD who was to have retired at the end of December, has volunteered to hang around until the AGM in April, by which point the interim management will, one hopes, have got to grips with things. But as one wit (not Wilde) once said, “If bankers can count, how come they have eight windows and only four tellers?” Maybe Stocken can stick around long enough to answer that one.
