EXTRAORDINARY ITEMS - Lies, damn lies and payment excuses.
“The cheque’s in the post” may be one of the most famous lies in the world but, according to a recent survey, it’s not the most common excuse for late payment. Finance group Alex Lawrie, which conducted a survey on behalf of the Better Payment Practices Group, says that the top honour goes to the biro-deficient phrase, “We’re waiting for the cheque to be signed”. Rarer, but still highly innovative excuses include the following: “The owner’s been buried with his chequebook.” “I do not speak English.” “Not now: it’s the office party.” “I cannot make payment until the planets are aligned, which is twice a year.”
