Putting almost 200 financial directors onto a cruise ship in the English Channel for two or three days sounds like a great way to party - and so it was at the end of June as the P&O ship Victoria set sail from Southampton for the first ever Richmond Events Finance Directors' Forum.
But there were lots of workshops, think tanks and high-level networking. Sure, there was a glass or three of something at the numerous bars but this was no ‘booze cruise’. No way. For one FD, though, the real joy of the floating conference was that he’d told his office that he would be out of reach of any cellphone – bliss! – even though it later transpired that the ship would drop anchor off the coast of the fully Vodafoned island of Jersey. Just as well. A satellite phone link costs £6 a minute!
