Professor Bill O’Riordan, the chief scientist at ICL, told shipboard delegates the story of Bill Gates’s meeting with the directors of General Motors, at which he berated them for the slow pace of technological change in Detroit.
“If the motor industry had advanced as quickly as the IT industry, then a family car would cost just $10,” he said. “Sure, replied the Motown top brass, “but who wants a car that crashes twice a day?”
