Lapthorne has moment of clarity
British Aerospace (BAe) FD Richard Lapthorne is notorious for finding it difficult to simplify the explanations and analyses of the company’s finances to meet the understanding of financial journalists. He always finds the gap between his intellect and that of the average hack just too great to bridge.
There was finally a meeting of minds at BAe’s last financial results announcement. After being pressed on the state of Airbus’ delicate manouevrings towards becoming a pan-European aircraft company, Lapthorne summed up the state of play thus: “The chances of us getting our strategy in place, in the time we predict and the order we predict, are about nil.” Now that’s the kind of language the hacks understand.
