The revelation that Sainsbury’s and Asda- owned by US retail giant Walmart- are seeking a merger reveals the impact of continuing disruption.

Although both retailers are performing reasonably well at the moment, they can foresee the growing challenge of discounters like Aldi and Lidl that are eating into the food sales market.

Then there is online giant Amazon which has gradually eroded their share of the non-food market and will at some stage will want to gobble up the grocery sector.

Management teams of every-sized company must assume a form of disruption will come their way- no matter how powerful their position is at present.

In that respect, all options must be considered- including mergers with arch-rivals.

As they say- if you’re not at the table, you’ll soon find yourself on the menu.
