The last few hours have been a reminder of how connected we all are – despite many efforts to withdraw into nationalist politics.

On a corporate level the arrest of Carlos Ghosn- the architect of the world’s biggest carmaker, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, has seen him dismissed from being the chairman and chief executive of Nissan and Mitsubishi. Only in Renault- has he been temporarily replaced in those key roles.

Another continent- another car maker, this time General Motors- where several plants and thousands of workers have been laid off.

President Trump was angry about the decision by GM CEO Mary Barra, as it undermines his America First policy, despite a contributory factor almost certainly being hiked steel import prices as a result of rising tariffs.
