Sections of UK industry face extinction unless the UK stays in the EU customs union, the CBI president has said.

He said car firm bosses had come to him saying the industry would suffer unless we get “real frictionless trade”.

Paul Dreschler also said there was “zero evidence” that trade deals outside the EU would provide any economic benefit to Britain.

The warning comes as Westminster saw two frantic days of votes that led to the government winning the right to overturn amendments to the Brexit bill.

But that victory only came after inserting a clause giving Parliament ‘backstop’ control over a final Brexit agreement.

It may be scant consolation for some sectors, but at least the horror show that would be crashing out of the EU without a deal is no longer a possibility.
