Stock markets around the world have slumped after US president Donald Trump’s unexpected threat to impose new tariffs on Chinese exports.

In the US the Dow Jones ended 1.8% down while London’s FTSE 100 fell 1.6%.


New car sales fell more than 4% in the UK last month, the second-lowest April since 2012 , with analysts blaming consumer reluctance to make significant purchases while Brexit uncertainty persists.

Just over 160,000 new cars were sold, with 10.3% fewer registrations by private motorists than a year ago.
