The House of Lords passed an amendment calling for the government to negotiate a customs union with the European Union, giving Theresa May a potential new headache in her Brexit plans.

It cames as attorney-general Geoffrey Cox returned from “difficult” talks in Brussels with British officials admitting that unless the EU gives ground in the coming days it is likely that the Prime Minister will lose next week’s potentially decisive House of Commons vote on her Brexit deal.

A no-deal Brexit would plunge the UK economy into recession and annual growth will slip below 1% this year for this first time since the financial crisis even if a deal is secured, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has warned.
